Speed Contest
Speed Contest, also known as Exhibition of Speed or Speed Ex, is an unlawful display of speed on public streets or highways using a motor vehicle. A Speed Contest includes a racing contest against another vehicle or a "peeling out" by a vehicle.
A Speed Contest is prosecuted in California under Vehicle Code section 23109 and is generally charged as a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in county jail, two years informal probation, plus significant fines. A Speed Contest conviction will result in two points added to your driving record. In California, a total of four points in a 12 month period leads to a suspension of your driving privileges. In addition, a Speed Contest conviction may substantially increase your automobile insurance premiums.
If you or someone you know is facing Speed Contest charges it is critical to consult with an experienced criminal defense attorney to learn about your legal options.
