Chapman Standard

If a convicted defendant's federal constitutional rights were impacted by a lower court error, the Chapman Standard requires that the prosecution show beyond a reasonable doubt that the error was harmless; otherwise, the conviction must be reversed. The Chapman Standard also referred to as the “Chapman Harmless Error Standard” comes from the Supreme Court case entitled: Chapman v. California (1967) 386 U.S. 18.
