Attorney of Record

The lawyer or law firm that is listed in the court documents as the representative of a particular party is called the “Attorney of Record.” Once a party to a legal action is represented by an attorney, all of the legal documents generated by the legal action must be sent to the Attorney of Record, as opposed to the party to the lawsuit.

For example, once a criminal defendant hires a lawyer and the lawyer informs the court that he is the Attorney of Record; the prosecution must stop contacting the Defendant and must communicate through the Attorney of Record.
